Wagering Requirements: The Real Math Behind Bonuses

A welcome bonus looks simple: deposit RM100, get RM100 free. The part that decides whether it is actually worth claiming is the wagering requirement — the amount you must bet before bonus funds can be withdrawn.

Most players never do this maths. It is not hard, and it is the single biggest difference between a good offer and a bad one. This guide walks through it with real numbers.

What a wagering requirement actually is

A wagering requirement (also called "rollover" or "playthrough") is written as a multiplier, like 30x. It means the qualifying amount must be bet 30 times in total before the bonus converts to withdrawable cash.

Important: it is total amount wagered, not money lost. If you bet RM10 and win RM10 back, you have still contributed RM10 towards the requirement.

The two formulas — and why the difference is huge

This is the detail that catches most people out. Read which one the terms use.

1. Bonus only (better for you)

Turnover needed = Bonus x WR

A RM100 bonus at 30x means RM3,000 of total bets.

2. Deposit + bonus (much harder)

Turnover needed = (Deposit + Bonus) x WR

The same RM100 deposit and RM100 bonus at 30x means (100 + 100) x 30 = RM6,000 of total bets.

Same headline offer. Double the work. Always check which basis applies before you claim.

Worked examples in ringgit

Assume a RM100 deposit with a 100% match (RM100 bonus), calculated on the bonus only:

  • 20x — RM2,000 turnover
  • 30x — RM3,000 turnover
  • 40x — RM4,000 turnover
  • 40x on deposit + bonus — RM8,000 turnover

That last line is four times the first, from an offer that looks nearly identical on the promotions page.

Game weighting changes everything

Not every game contributes equally. Typical weightings look like this:

  • Slots — usually 100% (RM10 bet counts as RM10)
  • Live casino and table games — often 10% to 20% (RM10 bet counts as RM1 to RM2)
  • Video poker and low-edge games — often reduced or excluded entirely

So a RM3,000 requirement played entirely on live casino at 10% weighting really means RM30,000 of live-casino bets. If you mainly play live casino, a bonus with poor table-game weighting is not built for you — and that is worth knowing before you deposit, not after.

How to estimate what the turnover really costs

Every bet has a small built-in house edge. Over a large turnover, your expected cost is roughly:

Expected cost = Turnover x (1 - RTP)

A slot with 96% RTP has a 4% edge. Clearing RM3,000 of turnover therefore costs, on average, about RM120 (3,000 x 0.04).

Compare that to what the bonus is worth:

  • RM100 bonus, 20x bonus-only, 96% RTP slots — RM2,000 turnover, roughly RM80 expected cost against a RM100 bonus
  • RM100 bonus, 40x on deposit + bonus, 96% RTP slots — RM8,000 turnover, roughly RM320 expected cost against the same RM100 bonus

This is why the multiplier and the basis matter far more than the headline percentage. A smaller bonus with a low, bonus-only requirement on high-RTP slots is often worth more than a bigger bonus with a heavy requirement.

(Short sessions swing widely either way — this is an average over the full turnover, not a prediction of one session.)

Three rules that quietly void bonuses

Even a good offer can be lost on a technicality. These are the usual ones:

  1. Max bet cap. Many bonuses cap your stake while wagering, often around RM10 per spin or hand. A single larger bet can void the entire bonus and any winnings from it.
  2. Time limit. Requirements typically expire in 7 to 30 days. Unfinished turnover means the bonus and its winnings are removed.
  3. Max conversion. Some offers cap how much bonus winnings can become withdrawable cash, for example 5x the bonus amount.

A checklist before you claim any bonus

Run through these six questions. It takes a minute and it is the whole game:

  1. Is the requirement on the bonus only, or deposit + bonus?
  2. What is the multiplier?
  3. What is the game weighting for the games you actually play?
  4. Is there a max bet while the bonus is active?
  5. How many days do you have?
  6. Is there a maximum conversion on winnings?

If the terms do not answer all six clearly, treat that as the answer.

The short version

  • Turnover is total bets placed, not losses
  • "Deposit + bonus" doubles the work versus "bonus only"
  • Live casino often counts for a fraction of slots
  • Roughly, turnover x (1 - RTP) is what clearing it costs on average
  • A low multiplier beats a big headline percentage almost every time

Understanding this does not make bonuses free money — nothing does. It does mean you can tell in under a minute which offers are worth your deposit and which ones are not.
